- Leaving Earth
Hawking already knew that Humans would only contribute to destroying the Earth. He said that humankind would eventually fall victim to an extinction-level catastrophe. In 2016, Hawking told BBC that, “the chances of extinction by an asteroid are low, but by humans itself is high!”.
- The Rise of AI!
In 2014 Hawking told the BBC that “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race”. He was fearful that developments in AI will give rise to “a new form of life that will outperform humans”.
Stephen Hawking predicted that genetic editing techniques will give rise to a breed of “superhumans” – “a race of self-designing beings who are improving at an ever-increasing rate”. If gene-edited superhuman would participate in wars, then there will be mass destruction.
- Climate Change
Hawking was very concerned about Climate change. Hawking said to BBC that, “Human activities could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of 250 degree Celsius and rain sulphuric acid”.
- Alien Contact
In 2010, he told the Discovery Channel: “If aliens visit us, the outcome might not be positive.” If extraterrestrial beings are less advanced than us, then things will go well, but if they turned out to be highly advanced, then it would be very bad news for humans.
Electronic Tree hidden inside Perseverance Rover
NASA’s Perseverance Rover is full of surprises! NASA scientists have fitted an instrument of the size of a car battery into the belly of Perseverance Rover. It is the only key for humans to survive on Mars!
The instrument is called MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment). Now, let’s have a look at what MOXIE will do on Mars:
- Main Job: To produce oxygen from Mars’ atmosphere and use it for breathing and fuel.
- Location: Inside the rover (front, right side)
- Oxygen Production Rate: Up to 10 grams per hour
MOXIE makes oxygen as a tree does. It inhales carbon dioxide and exhales oxygen. Homemade liquid oxygen on Mars could supply more than ¾ of the fuel humans need for exploration on the Red Planet.
When people are sent to Mars, their safe return is a priority, which means that a fueled rocket is needed to lift them off the planet. This is where MOXIE will play its role, to provide oxygen for fuel & breathing.
Future MOXIE’s will be 100 times larger and productive aiming to produce 99.6% pure O2. Once generated, the device will be releasing both the oxygen and carbon monoxide molecules back into the atmosphere. Do you think we can make the Red Planet more like Earth?
Protagoras Paradox: Can You Crack It?
This Paradox is originated in Greece. This case was not solved! The most interesting part – this is still debated (even today) in law schools as a logic problem! A famous teacher Protagoras came across a student called Euathlus to tutor him on the law.
Euathlus was not having enough money, therefore they came upon an agreement that the student pays Protagoras for his tutoring fees soon after he wins his first court case. However, after the law course, Euathlus had a change of mind and decided to not enter the profession of law.
Fed up with this, the teacher Protagoras decided to sue the student in Court! Firstly, Protagoras said to the judge that, “If I win this case, as per the court of law, the student has to pay me as the case is about his non-payment of dues.”
“And if I lose the case, the student will still pay me because he would have won his first case as per the original contract. So either way, I will get the money”. However, Euathlus had a different claim, “If I win the case, as per the court of law, I don’t have to pay anything to the teacher as the case is about my non-payment of dues.”
“And if I lose the case, I don’t have to pay him because I haven’t won my first case yet. So either way, I am not going to pay the teacher anything”. This is one of the greatest paradoxes ever recorded. Who is right and who is the winner?
Scientists can stop aging and make humans immortal
Jeanne Calment lived for 122 years and was the oldest person ever to live. She was born in 1875 and died in 1997. So, what did she do right? The answer, according to her, is olive oil and chocolate. Our genes are responsible for a 25% possibility of living a long life.
Rest is depending on how you eat, your surrounding, and your exercise. Scientists believe that they can stop people from aging. They theorize that once aging can be controlled, all diseases caused due to old age will no longer exist. This would make people immortal unless under circumstances like accidents.
Aubrey Grey, a Biomedical Gerontology, has done some research and has said that the first person to live as long as 1000 years is already amongst us. However, we are yet to find him/her. Grey says that the cause of most deaths is old age and the diseases that catch up to you.
If we can stop aging, these fatal diseases can be avoided and most likely die too. Many researchers suggest that metformin, a cheap and widely prescribed pill for diabetes, may also be an anti-aging serum. The research is currently in phase III. The final phase is yet to decide.
Nature can also stop aging like in animals like jellyfish. This is why scientists believe that they can stop aging or reverse it by studying the habits of these animals. Scientists have also come up with the idea of using CRISPR, a gene-editing tool, to stop this aging and eventually cure death.
In research, about 35 people were chosen who were 64 years old or above. They received oxygen therapy in a pressurized chamber, and after almost 60 daily sessions, the aging cells of candidates had decreased.
