IBM is inventing AI based Silicon Chips That Could Be 100X More Energy Efficient

An artificial intelligence built on the top of neural networks has always been a part of the future talks. The neural networks structured over the software was the reason for the major change but then this network was relatively slow. Any software which depends completely on hardware ends up lowering down the performance. This was one of the major problems unless the IBM researchers came up with an amazingly beautiful solution. IBM has come up with a super microchip that which is 100x more energy efficient.

The IBM researchers have tested this microchip and found that the results produced by these chips are exactly the same as software chip. These chips work with great accuracy and they consume just 1 percent of the energy in comparison with the software-based chip previously developed. They have demonstrated this chip usage in a paper published in the “Nature” journal. The researchers on the paper have tested this AI machine on handwriting and image color classification task.

The Overview

These chip mimic the neurons in the brain. The power of these connections would make the chip get tuned for a great learning accuracy. They say that if rightly implemented these chips will have 100x relative performance than the present generation chips. The chip is 89 nanometers in size at present in width. They retain the data even without any current supply. IBM which has never entered yet in the computer silicon chip is suspected to not to enter in the future as well. They would partner with other companies and help them with this super powerful chip technology.

The downside

Though they have made an amazing effort for such an establishment it still has a long way to go. These chips are pretty bulk over the size. These chips carry 5 transistors and other components which are comparably more in number than the present standard chips. However, these chips would reduce down the task of learning in the machine through neural network greatly efficient.

The researchers also added that they have used a bad iterative write methodology for the chip. This methodology of write has reduced the chip latency with nearly 10 microseconds. More advanced research in the future will definitely help with a greater write performance.


The researches from all parts of the world have made several attempts previously in establishing such chips but failed due to low accuracy. This achievement of IBM is a great one.  The researches lately said that the company needs to perform more research on analyzing the chips size. The results proven by IBM were great and hence when brought down to the normal computers would bring down a new tech era. These things would take pretty much time to move into the market. Nearbout 7 to 10 years to really come into existence on small devices.

This discovery by IBM is an important factor to the commercial use as well. At present scenario, IBM doesn’t sell computer silicon chips. Once the research is done and brought down to the commercial scenario it would change the complete overview of silicon chips based flash memory chips.
